MAY 4 2008, BEDFORD, NS : Tim Outhit, whose candidacy was profiled in Sanchin Films' web series TimTV, emerged as the winner of last night's municipal election, collecting 57 percent of the vote. Considered an underdog when he announced his candidacy, Outhit credited his use of new media with energizing voters.
"We used Facebook, e-mail and voicemail broadcasts, You Tube and the web — everything to try and get people, particularly young people, to understand that municipal politics affects so much of what affects us everyday," said Outhit in an interview with The Chronicle Herald.
Paul St.Amand, president of Sanchin Films and a Bedford native, followed Outhit with a small camera package periodically during the campaign, leading up to the May 3 election. TimTV webisodes examined issues such as infrastructure, recreational facilities, and safe streets. There were also webisodes dedicated to nomination day, campaign volunteers, voting tips, and door-to-door campaigning.
"I have been a strong advocate for Nova Scotia and Bedford's knowledge-driven economy," said Outhit at the launch of TimTV. "Reaching out to voters using innovative methods is part of that commitment. I was so pleased to find an award-winning Bedford-based filmmaker who could help us realize our vision for the campaign."
